Heavy wrecking crew ten56. have released IO, their brand-new album and the crushing follow-up to 2022’s debut Downer. If Downer was the opening blow, IO is the knockout punch – darker, heavier, and more unrelenting than anything the band have released so far.
Described by the band as “a period of difficulty and resilience, hardships and growth,” IO is built on raw honesty and emotional turmoil. It’s a record that digs deep into themes of mental health, fractured identity, and personal pain, with vocalist Aaron Matts laying it all bare through his most vulnerable yet venomous performances to date.
Speaking on the release of the album, the band shares: “We are both excited and, let’s say, relieved to deliver this record. It explores yet uncharted territories for us as a band and encapsulates a period in time for us all on a personal level; a period of difficulty and resilience, hardships and growth. We hope this transparency comes through in these tracks, and touches our listeners but old and new.
“We’ve put so much of ourselves into this record and it only exists thanks to those who have taken the time to dip their toes into our universe. This is IO. We love you, and we will see you all soon, wherever you are.”
To mark the album’s release, ten56. have dropped a music video for their latest single ‘Snapped Neck’ , a track that pairs Matts’ chilling melodic vocals with the band’s trademark brutality, creating one of their most unsettling yet impactful songs to date.
Matts explains: “This track is particular, in the way that it bounces back and forth between confrontational, almost egotistical anger and total vulnerability; we knew that in order to portray this inner battle, that we needed to explore new sounds and vocal atmospheres. This track does a good job of portraying the mental gymnastics that IO tries to encapsulate. We hope you guys feel it.”
Across its labyrinth of grinding grooves and twisted riffs, IO plunges listeners into a story of inner chaos and destructive self-reflection. From feelings of betrayal and revenge to moments of fragility and revelation, the record captures ten56. at their most dangerous, but also their most human.
Or as Matts bluntly puts it: “The reason why I started ten56. was to talk about these things that I have on my mind, and unburden myself of them… I don’t know how to write positive lyrics. I’ve always liked extremely heavy music, and this was my way of getting these thoughts off my mind.”
IO cements ten56. as one of the most vital new forces in heavy music today, fearless in their honesty, relentless in their sound.
