Every Hell Release New Single & Video ‘Catching Thunder’

Brighton/Bristol heavy outfit Every Hell have returned with renewed force, unveiling their new single “Catching Thunder.”

Born from what the band describe as a period of reinvention following their Vertebrate EP, “Catching Thunder” captures Every Hell at their most focused, ambitious and sonically expansive. Vocalist and sax player Will Gardner says the track has been a long time coming, having been recorded last July at Middle Farm Studios with Pete Miles, but held back as the band refined their evolving direction.

“Catching Thunder was one of the earliest tracks that we wrote together after the Vertebrate EP,” Gardner explains. “Lyrically the song is about staying strong and keeping self-belief in difficult times. The oxymoron of Catching Thunder itself is a bit like trying to catch air… you can’t.”

Musically, the single reflects that tension between chaos and control. Built initially around Andrew Gosden’s bassline, the track quickly expanded into something far more explosive, with a Queens of the Stone Age-inspired chorus groove and a volatile, stomping 6/8 finale that the band admit was almost scrapped during heated studio debates.

“The ending was a bit more contentious,” Gardner adds, “but that full-on stomp, dragon-riding 6/8 vibe just felt too good not to use. Even if it makes it a difficult beast to play live.”

Producer and drummer Mark Roberts speaks on the accompanying performance video: “The video was shot super quick, like 30mins. We’ve long talked about making something that “breaks the 4th wall”. Sounds pretty pretentious, but the nature of shooting a performance video that everyone knows isn’t a live performance has always felt a bit trite. So rather than trying to keep with the illusion we thought it’d be fun (as well as fitting our budget and time) to just embrace the process from both sides, leaving in equipment, stuff that “should” be out of frame, even camera operators. It also worked well with this songs story, in a way a metaphor of striving for some kind of perfection and never reaching it, the incidental aspects that are “wrong” are still there…“

Every Hell are set to bring their new era to the stage throughout May, joining Haggard Cat and Alpha Male Tea Party on the road, before festival appearances at The Great Escape Festival this summer and a July run supporting the recently reformed Arcane Roots.
