CITIZEN Release new single & video ‘Hyper Trophy’

Like a box of delicious alternative rock chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get from a Citizen release as they have built a career of re-inventing their sound between albums whilst still maintaining their core sonic values. “Hyper Trophy” is the bands latest offering and the second from their forthcoming fifth album Calling The Dogs out 6th October 2023. The song is a short but super sweet head bopping track with funked up guitar and bass lines, upbeat rhythms and hooked filled vocals that is bound to have crowds jumping and singing along around the world.
Directed by guitarist Mason Mercer, the accompanying video finds the band in the middle of an undefined pursuit. speaking on the making of the video, Mercer shares, “Using infrared and thermal imaging, we filmed on a pitch black desert ranch in SoCal in the middle of the night wrapping at 4am… We couldn’t see anything, but the camera could see everything. Our themes were kept purposefully ambiguous and left simply at ‘pursuit’ and ‘mission’.”
Speaking on the themes of “Hyper Trophy,” Kerekes says, “Sometimes, though you are trying hard to accomplish something, it can’t be done. This song is about a relentless pursuit of an objective, but still failing – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If you find something you love and pour everything you have into that, I find that admirable regardless of the outcome.”
