Metalcore titans August Burns Red are back with a bang. After over two decades of defining and redefining metalcore, ABR have released their latest single “Behemoth”, marking their return to Fearless Records.
ABR’s career needs little introduction. With multiple Billboard Top 200 top 10 placements, tours with heavyweights like Bullet For My Valentine and A Day To Remember, and over 600 million streams to their name, the band has cemented itself as one of the most influential acts in the scene. Grammy nominations for Best Metal Performance in 2016 (“Identity”) and 2018 (“Invisible Enemy”) underline their impact, but the band has never rested on past successes.
“Behemoth” is everything its name promises. From Herculean breakdowns to battering ram percussion and battle cry choruses, the track is heavy in all the right ways. Yet ABR also showcase their dynamic range, dropping quiet, introspective moments amidst the chaos, a reminder that true heaviness doesn’t always need to be fast and loud.
“‘Behemoth’ is a song that probably went through more revisions and changes than any song we’ve ever written,” says guitarist JB Brubaker. “While frustrating at times, the conversations and re-writes were worth the effort as we collectively feel very proud of how this song turned out. I believe it’s one of the heaviest and most raw songs we’ve ever delivered.”
Lyrically, the song tackles personal growth and overcoming past trauma. Frontman Jake Luhrs explains, “‘Behemoth’ speaks about the realization of past pains living through present actions in life. With the determination to face this reality, a process of healing and breaking old ways leads to a rebirth. It’s about cutting the ties to your past, giving it no space to live in the present, and inevitably, changing the course of your life.”
After 20+ years of crushing riffs, relentless energy, and genre-defining releases, August Burns Red prove once again why they remain one of metalcore’s most enduring and beloved bands. “Behemoth” isn’t just a single, it’s a statement: ABR are heavier, sharper, and more vital than ever.
