Connecticut modern emo favourites Anxious have released their highly anticipated sophomore album, Bambi, via Run For Cover Records. If you’re in the market for heartfelt music that takes influence from the mid-western emo greats to punk records of the 90s and 00s then this is the album for you. Bambi showcases meticulously arranged and ultra-dynamic songwriting that packs an emotional punch, exploring themes of growing up, breakups, burnout, and the struggles of life on the road. The tricky second album is something a lot of artists struggle with after the success of the first, however Anxious have used the time between to truly hone in their sound and expand upon it. Recorded with producer Brett Romnes (The Movielife, Front Bottoms, Oso Oso) at The Barber Shop Studios, Bambi is a statement of purpose for Anxious as they push their songwriting and sonic ambition to new heights.
The record’s latest single, and track 1 on the record “Never Said,” sets the tone with shimmering guitars and an explosive blend of melody and aggression while lyrically addressing issues they experience within the scene.
Speaking on the single Vocalist Grady Allen shares:“In our music subculture, there often seems to be this dynamic where people stay close to others regardless of the fact of whether they really like them or not. You hear subtle whispers and rumors about what people really think of you, but those feelings are never expressed to you directly. It’s an exhausting social dynamic and one that I am desperate to let go of. ‘Never Said”s lyrics focus on that idea. The song came about super weirdly and indirectly. I went over to Dante’s house last winter and we just started shooting this riff back and forth. We started frankenstein-ing new parts onto it over several months and eventually it just sort of fell into what it was. It was a cool process- we rarely write that way. It was fun to just sort of keep throwing things together and see what happened.”
Other standout tracks include singles “Counting Sheep,” which blends dreamy atmosphere with jagged guitars, and “Head & Spine,” which showcases ‘90s alt-rock influences. Meanwhile, “Audrey Go Again” and “Next Big Star” highlight the band’s ability to craft intricate arrangements beyond their typical high-energy delivery.
Bambi’s closer, “I’ll Be Around,” is a mid-tempo anthem about enduring friendships, offering a hopeful and forgiving conclusion to an album brimming with raw emotion and unfiltered honesty. As Anxious continues their rise, Bambi proves they’re not just looking back on what could have been—they’re forging a future that’s entirely their own.
