Live Review – Pvris | 13.05.24 | Glasgow

From the rain storms of Manchester to well, more rain in Glasgow Pvris officially kicked off the UK leg of their tour on what should be night number two as the freak English weather stopped Manchester’s curtain raiser the night before. Despite having only just played in Glasgow in October last year supporting Fall Out Boy, it was a welcome return regardless from their loyal Scottish fans and a chance to hear more songs from last year’s album “Evergreen” and singles old and new in a headline setting.

I arrived just after doors and in time for tonight’s opening act Sophie Powers. The teenage sensation comes with a lot of excitement after emerging as a formidable force in the alternative scene over the last few years with some slapping singles. The Canadian has turned a lot of heads with her bratty, cyberpunk vibes and her set was short and sweet but packed a punch. Filled with a mixed selection of early and new songs with the added bonus of brand new tune ‘Woah’ that was released only a week ago. Running around stage in her bright pink leather suit she delivers an energetic performance as popular tracks like ‘Nosebleed’ & ‘Better On Mute’ rang out before closing off on 2021 hit ‘Greed’. Sophie’s live performance shines a positive light on what she is striving to achieve and shows why she is quickly becoming one of the most exciting new acts in the alt scene and she certainly left her mark on Glasgow’s turf.

From one powerful female rising star to another, ‘Bimbocore’ singer Scene Queen makes her epic return to the city she loves so much and by the amount of pink feathers and cowboy hats in the crowd, it’s easy to see how many fans she has in the building. An EDM mashup of Barbie Girl shakes the venues foundations as she skips on to the stage dripped in her usual attire kicking off with one of her recent drops ‘Finger’. The experience of a Scene Queen live show comes with countless talking points in the best possible way with so much fun radiating from the stage on every song, however the powerful messages behind the music is the reason why so many people love and connect with these songs – she empowers a whole room with the messages that woman should wear and be free to do what they want without judgement. Fan favourites ‘18+’ and ‘Barbie & Ken’ receive the expected reactions before one big sing along to ‘Pink Panther’ closes off a set that can only be described as “slay”. The smiles are constantly gleaming across the ‘Bimbocore’ artist’s face as she remind’s the crowd of how much she loves Glasgow, a love that is reciprocated back by the fans. Scene Queen is quickly becoming a major name in music and after tonight it is easy to see why.

The time had come to greet tonight’s headliners on to the stage, the PA playing bangers as the stage is set, then drops the lights as smoke fills the stage ready for the arrival of Pvris. The stage is draped in white material and there was a chilled aesthetic feel in the room, however that was soon to change as the band launch into dance anthem ‘I Don’t Wanna Do This Anymore’ straight into ‘Animals’ kicking off the show in style and instantly bringing out the Glaswegian vocals in the crowd. The engagement between singer Lynn Gunn and fans has to be admired as you get an instant feeling of just what this city and this crowd means to her and the band. Gunn keeps things fresh with a switch up from the up beat electro rock to the slower loved up tracks bringing the tempo down but by no means bringing down the volume, before a shortened version of ‘Fire’ came in hard showcasing the best in Lynn’s vocals.

The artistic light show is one to be admired too, it helps to enhance the songs and the excitement of the crowd whether it be in the moment or capturing that perfect photo. Popular favourite ‘Monster’ hits the middle of the set with ‘What’s Wrong’ & ‘Mirrors’ following shortly after, the energy of the crowd never halts with their decibel levels seemingly rising for each song. Looking around and seeing friends, couples and more in unison all bringing out the best in each other, it’s clear to see why the band keep Glasgow on every touring bill. Saving the bigger numbers till last, ‘Take My Nirvana’ & ‘My House’ see out what’s been a spectator set and to end Lynn invites Scene Queen on stage to help with the closing of ‘Goddess’, prior to this dedicating the song to all powerful woman who are on this tour. It was a set that showcased the high level Pvris are still at, it’s also shown just how important they are within the alternative scene producing such iconic shows in big rooms – shows like tonight tell their own story and this was definitely one for the band’s history books.
