Prolific metalcore progressives ERRA have shared a new single, ‘i. the many names of god.’ The track is the opening piece of the album’s closing trilogy, which also includes “ii. in the gut of the wolf” and “iii. twilight in the reflection of dreams”, a series that channels the record’s darkest and most visceral emotions.
Frontman Jesse Cash explains the single’s place in the album, Silence Outlives the Earth: “The many names of god is the first in what we consider the trilogy of Silence Outlives the Earth. The trilogy represents a distinct shift in tone from the previous songs on the record. The record transitions to a darker place at this point, and the many names serves to take the heaviest moods expressed in the preceding tracks and visceralize them.”
Silence Outlives the Earth marks a bold statement from ERRA, blending existential introspection with the crushing intensity the band is known for. From the atmospheric opening of “stelliform” to the reflective quieter passages, the album exists in a liminal space that explores being caught between past and present, personal experience, and the wider world. The band’s signature extremes are captured with remarkable precision on this record, thanks to production by Daniel Braunstein, who also produced their previous three albums. The results are songs that feel more cohesive and connected than ever, while still delivering the cathartic intensity ERRA fans expect.
Cash adds insight into the personal yet universal nature of their songwriting: “When I wrote [‘black cloud’], I was thinking about the day my dad died, but I wasn’t writing about my dad dying… It would be inaccurate to say that song was written about my dad. It’s not, but that is the feeling I was anchoring to while writing it.”
This approach allows listeners to create their own narrative within ERRA’s music, making the album as much about the individual experience as it is about the band’s own story.
In essence, Silence Outlives the Earth is a reflection on humanity, existence, and the state of the world, presented through ERRA’s signature blend of dreamy soundscapes and crushing metalcore intensity. It’s a record that evolves with every listen, capturing the constant flux of life itself, and reinforcing why ERRA continue to be at the forefront of progressive metal.
