UK metal outfit Defects have returned with a brand new single, ‘Artificial Icons’ which marks their first new music since 2024’s Modern Error. A track fuelled by rage at a world dominated by control, manipulation, and lies with a volatile mix of crushing riffs, thunderous breakdowns, and soaring choruses.

Frontman Tony Maue reflects on the track’s message: “Look around. I wanted to write a song that pushes you to think outside the box. I was faced with religious teachings when I was younger. I felt fear, I felt rage, and I wanted to fight back. Believe in what you choose, not in what others force on you for their own agendas, profit or control”

The band has also confirmed significant lineup changes, marking the start of a new era. In late summer 2025, the band faced a turning point. Drummer Harry Jennings, guitarist Luke Genders, and bassist David Silver stepped back to focus on new chapters in their lives. Together with Maue, they co-wrote a final batch of music, leaving a lasting legacy before departing.

Maue and guitarist James Threadwell are now steering the band forward alongside new members Taylor Brown (Guitar) and Rowan Jack (Drums). “It was incredibly tough. They’re my friends. I love those guys to pieces. When we wrote together, there was a real bond,” Maue says. “There were moments when I didn’t know how to piece this together to walk forward.”

Despite the bittersweet transition, the band’s fire remains undiminished. ‘Artificial Icons’ is the first glimpse of this renewed era. “I can’t give up. I’ve given up before. I know what that looks like, and I’m not doing that again,” Maue affirms.
