Ben Quad is back with their highly anticipated follow-up to 2022’s I’m Scared That’s All There Is. Their new album, Wisher, marks a shift from the uncertainty and fear of youth captured in their debut to a more hopeful and reflective outlook. According to frontman Viveros, the album title represents “the part of ourselves that looks ahead to a better future.”
While the record still touches on themes of grief and loss, it leans into optimism and growth. “The overarching theme of this album is about accepting that pain and insecurity will follow us through the rest of our lives but that we can grasp on to the small moments that make life worthwhile,” Viveros explains. “Overall, this record is the most confident we’ve ever been as songwriters… There are moments where we venture into experimental and folky territory, but a good amount of the album is also us having fun and leaning into full pop-sensibility.”
The band’s journey from Oklahoma to New Jersey led them to producer Jon Markson (The Story So Far, Drug Church), where they recorded at his farm – their first real studio experience. Amidst barnyard animals and the tranquil countryside, Ben Quad found both time and space to develop the next stage of their sound.
Standout tracks include the singles “It’s Just a Title,” the cathartic “Painless,” the playful “Very Big In Sheboygan.” and their hopeful love song and new single “All Your Luck.”
“The recording session for ‘Wisher’ was such a pivotal period of growth for this band. It felt like we were finally pushing ourselves outside of the typical emo mold. ‘All Your Luck’ is a good encapsulation of that experience… We basically sat down at the studio and tried our best to channel the pop sensibility of artists we loved growing up – Third Eye Blind, Michelle Branch, Goo Goo Dolls, etc. It was a really nice change of pace writing something that was emotional, but not in a sad or angry way.”
Wisher is out now via Pure Noise Records and is available for physical purchase here.
Ben Quad has kicked off a US tour supporting labelmates KOYO, before heading to the UK and EU to tour with Arm’s Length. Tickets are available at benquad.com/tour.
