As Everything Unfolds Announce New Album ‘Did You Ask To Be Set Free?’ & Drop New Single ‘Gasoline’

UK post-hardcore favourites As Everything Unfolds have announced their brand new album Did You Ask To Be Set Free?, set for release on April 10th via Century Media.
To mark the announcement, the band have also unveiled a powerful new single, ‘Gasoline’, a track that dives headfirst into obsession, destiny and the emotional wreckage left behind when connection becomes inescapable.
Frontwoman Charlie Rolfe describes the song as an exploration of an intense, almost fated bond between two people — a “twin flame” connection that feels impossible to ignore, even when it threatens everything else in your life:
“‘Gasoline’ is a story about that unquantifiable and confusing human bond you get with someone else… that mutual connection with an unknown person, almost like you were destined to be in each other’s lives.”
The track wrestles with denial, temptation and the heartbreak that comes from trying to resist something that feels both wrong and inevitable. That emotional push and pull is reflected visually too, with the accompanying music video drawing inspiration from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, specifically the toxic, otherworldly relationship between Count Dracula and Mina. The band cite the 1994 film adaptation as a key reference point, with several shots acting as deliberate homages.
Did You Ask To Be Set Free? is described as As Everything Unfolds’ most personal and emotionally complex record to date. Written during a period of profound upheaval, the album charts a journey through grief, numbness and disorientation before slowly finding momentum again.
Built around the concept of maladaptive daydreaming, the record explores fantasy as both a refuge and a trap, touching on themes of addiction, burnout, self-sacrifice and fractured relationships. Rather than offering clean answers or resolution, the album embraces uncertainty, documenting the fragile and ongoing process of learning how to exist, grieve and continue.
Drawing inspiration from cinema, literature and subconscious writing, the album evolves sonically and lyrically as it progresses, mirroring real emotional change rather than resisting it.
