Three piece multi-million streaming icons Against the Current are back with another slammer single “Silent Stranger”. The New York pop-rock trio introduce their fans to the new ‘Nightmares era’ which is rammed full of black and white imagery and a dark-pop edge that elevates the bands notable classic sound many adore. The single comes as a follow up to Good Guy that landed back in April.
Thematically the song is about all about shedding the persona they’ve created for themselves and the challenges of reclaiming their authentic identity. I personally really enjoyed the single when I first heard it – it’s a very strong and steady track that makes great use of keys and electronic elements to show their ability to dance between different styles and genres. For me it’s certainly the strongest of recent releases they have so far.
Speaking on the song Lead singer Christina Costanza says: “silent stranger” marks the arrival of the Nightmares era, where lines can easily become blurred or swept away entirely. Embarking on a spiral of panic, what’s real and what’s forced can no longer be distinguished from one another; imposter syndrome pushed to the point of no return.”
The single comes with a stunning artistic music video, symbolizing the self-reflective themes of the track through mirror imagery and a semi-transparent box. Like every ATC music video, the visuals are very pleasing on the eye all while representing the experience of becoming a shadow of who you once were.
